5 Kitchen Upgrades I Would NEVER Spend My Money On

Kitchen Upgrades; They're A Really Big Deal

Not only do homeowners have to brave a sea of choices in kitchen remodels, but some upgrades may just be enticing sounding, neither adding as much value as desired nor as functional as touted. Having seen it all from the point of view of one at National Stone LV, let me go ahead and give my two cents on five such popular kitchen upgrades, which I would not invest a dime in. Having said that, these upgrades have the ability to work provided they are thoroughly thought over.

This is not about your personal preference; it's to help you make informed decisions as you embark on your kitchen renovation journey. Whether one is designing a modern oasis or a cozy family hub, let's dive into the upgrades and how they might—or might not—fit your vision.

1. Stainless Steel Sinks

Why I Avoid Them: Stainless steel sinks are the defaults for most modern kitchens, but man, are they impractical for the long run. They scratch, lose their shine, and show every water spot and smudge. After some time, this will affect the looks of your kitchen. Besides, there's the noise factor—the clatter of pots and pans on the metal that could wake up the whole household.

Making It Work for You: If you love the sleek look of stainless steel, take the plunge with high-quality styles that are thicker in gauge—from 16 to 18—thus more durable and quieter in performance. Choose a brushed finish or satin over a reflection-like polish to help blend in scratches and water rings. For added functionality in your sink, pair it with a fitted grid to prevent scratching and reduce noise. Take care of them well, and you will be able to enjoy the benefits of a classic kitchen feature.

2. Touchless Faucets

Why I Avoid Them: Sure, touchless faucets are convenient, but the negatives outweigh any positives in my opinion. Sensors can be finicky and result in wasted water through accidental activation or because the sensor just doesn't recognize your hand. They also take more maintenance to avoid fingerprints, water spots, and grime around the sensor area. The upfront cost and repairs also make them less practical than the more traditional options.

Making It Work for You: If hands-free is important to you, look for faucets with dual activation—manual and sensor. This flexibility ensures your faucet remains usable even when the sensor malfunctions. For families with children, consider models with adjustable sensitivity to minimize accidental activations. Opt for finishes such as matte black, brushed nickel, or stainless steel to make cleaning easier while maintaining a modern aesthetic.

3. High-Gloss Cabinetry

Why I Pass: High-gloss cabinetry is sleek-looking, yes, but really high-maintenance. Forget about fingerprint smudges and a scratch here or there if you have young children or just cook a great deal in your kitchen. The reflective surface makes such imperfections, along with general dirt and grime, look even more obvious. All that's going to give this element a quick swerve into 'design regret' territory should you not put in the upkeep.

Making It Work for You: If you love the clean, shiny look, use high-gloss cabinetry sparingly. It's best to apply it to upper cabinets or rarely used areas. Lighter colors, such as white or light gray, tend to exhibit less smudging than the darker colors. To even things out, high-gloss finishes should be contrasted with matte or textural elements, such as natural wood or stone, for a cohesive and compelling kitchen design.

4. Intricately Designed Cabinet Handles

Why I Avoid Them: Those ornate cabinet handles do catch your eye, but they have loads of hidden cons. Their intricate designs are pretty much a trap that holds dust, grease, and grime, which is very hard to clean. They tend to feel dated in just a couple of years if the whole vibe of your kitchen design is minimalistic or contemporary.

Making It Work for You: If it's detailed hardware that speaks your language, consider pairing a luxe material with an easy-to-clean finish, like polished chrome, brushed brass, or matte black. Then balance ornate handles with sleek, modern cabinets, so the room doesn't feel overwhelmed. Test handles for comfort, too—it’s just as crucial as aesthetics in an active kitchen.

5. Over-the-Range Microwaves

Why I'm Not a Fan: Placing a microwave above the range seems like it's space-saving, but really it ends up being some type of compromise. Over-the-range microwaves do not work nearly as well as dedicated range hoods, which creates an issue in a heavily used kitchen. In addition, the placement of a microwave above the stove limits usage to taller individuals since smaller statured or short children would not be able to use it, resulting in lost functionality and easiness.

How It All Works in Your Favor: If this upgrade is not up for negotiation, models with built-in, reliable ventilation systems—mostly expressed with a higher CFM—should be given the uppermost priority, as you'd want more air changes every minute in your room to maintain its freshness. Further, be sure that appropriate clearance remains between the range and the microwave to maximize safety, as well as usability of both components, or investigate a microwave drawer for easier accessibility or have your built-in contractor install your microwave to create ease and simplicity within.
